China has long been a misunderstood nation. Throughout it's long history, China has intrigued people. When Marco Polo wrote of his travels to China in the 13th century, the Venician people branded him with the name "Il Milione" referring to what they thought were the million lies in his book. China remained a secretive Empire with foreigners having limited access. Even today, though open to the world, this Middle Kingdom remains an element of wonder. Misconceptions have build up and falsehoods taken as truths. A recent article from Newsweek tackles 6 of the biggest myths about modern china.

Just been looking at a BBC slide show on their news sight. The audio give a quick history of China from 1949 to 2009. The slide show images show various propaganda posters, predominantly from the first 40 years of China. It is interesting to see how the art changes with time. Initially Mao is seen in the art as a man surrounded by ordinary people. Later he becomes deified, overlooking the workers below. Then towards the end it focuses on images of young red guards on courageous endeavors and clutching their little red books. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/8279176.stm

The one time sleeping tiger of Asia is well and truly awakened and has become a major power on the world stage. However, this is also a time to look back. To remember what has gone before. China's rise hasn't been without some major stumbles along the way. The transition from a feudal monarchy to a modern government and modern lifestyles, was not easy. Finally it is a time to look forward. To plan the next 10 years. What challenges does the country face? What new greatness could China acquire?
