China is buying more cars than ever.

Not content with outstriping the US last year for the number of new car sales. China is still expanding and buying even more cars than ever. News today published by the UK newspaper, The Gaurdian, quotes figures from General Motors that September was a record month for GM car sales in China. In just September alone, GM sold 181,148 new cars. Bringing the total sales for 2009 up to 13 million. That's a 55% increase on last year. Read the whole article here.

Car ownership in China is rising. This is a refection of the growth of China's ecconomy as a whole. While many countries in the world are experiencing a contraction in their ecconomies, China is still growing and growing steadily and quickly. As a new middle class developes in China, demand for high value goods is increasing. China is, today, going through a revolution that the UK and USA went through in the 50's and 60's, where car travel changes lifestyle. The ability to travel for leisure and also for work will have a great influence on China's development. People with cars, no longer need to live close to work. An expansion of suburbia is on the cards. Villages, that today are seen as low value, could soon be seen is ideal, out of town, retreats for the new car owning commuters.
